Fort Oostoever is a unique historic defensive structure on the North Holland Canal, which once formed one whole together with Fort Westoever.
From keel place to fort
Since 1791, the site of the current fort has been home to “Het Nieuwe Werk” – a keelyard and workshop that would later evolve into the famous Rijkswerf (National Shipyard). This constitutes a key foundation for Den Helder’s economic development.
A ‘half fort’ with a special history
Fort Oostoever was literally halved by the expansion of the municipality of Den Helder. The original defense structure was split up, which is why it is now known as “the half fort.”
Currently in use
The fort is currently in use by the shooting club “De Vrijheid.” Visits are by request only.
