The city centre is currently undergoing a major transformation. Hiking around Den Helder is beautiful. Everyone who travel North to the top of North Holland will be rewarded with a suprisingly versatile route. Hike on winding paths through dunes and on top of the dyke past the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage. You will see forts, musea, a big red lighthouse and end up in a city centre with any places to rest and have a bite to eat.

Balgzandpolder
The Balgzandpolder is entirely designed for birds. You always see birds here resting or looking for food. At high tide in the Wadden Sea there are extra birds to be seen here. They can often be admired from a short distance via a viewing screen. Birds that you can see, for example, are spoonbills, many species of ducks, large groups of oystercatchers and redshanks and amongst them rarer birds such as spotted redshanks and greenshanks.

‘WSV Onrust’
The marina of the Onrust association is situated around the "Onrust" residential area. On one side the Bassin and Spoorhaven and on the other side the Helders Kanaal (the canal). The club has around 100 berths in total. The size of the berths varies from 6 meters to around 17 meters. In the Helders Kanaal the berths are issued at the length of the ship while the boxes are issued at box length (12 meters for the Bassin and 15 meters for the Spoorhaven).

De natuurroute
The Helderse Vallei is the starting point of the 4 well-marked canoe routes that Den Helder has, with various jetties along the way. In addition, Den Helder has various waterways that are easily accessible for canoes.
