The department of Den Helder was founded in 1822 and is therefore the oldest existing association of the naval city. For a century and a half it had a pioneering role in education and development. The utility kindergartens, household education, the utility savings bank, these were all initiatives from this local department.

Scheepsfolk is a Dutch maritime folk band with its own unique sound. The band regularly performs in many countries during festivals and nautical events and in folk clubs. The enthusiastic crew accompanies themselves with accordion, guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, draw bag, washboard, candrum, kazoo, cajon and double bass. The musical influences come from all over Europe, so Scheepsfolk has developed its own unique style.

General mixed choir Mescalanza from Julianadorp will be 25 years old in 2019! The first rehearsal was on September 22, 1994. At the moment, the Mescalanza choir consists of about fifty members. The conductor is Durk Geertsma with Dick Laan on the piano.

Our Dutch culture seems to be fading, but not in Den Helder. Since 1975, the Helderse Draaiorgelvrienden have been active to maintain a tradition. The 90-key street organ 'de Harmonica' is managed and operated by the volunteers of 'Stichting Helderse Draaiorgelvrienden'. Almost every Saturday they are with the organ in the city center of Den Helder. On an original wooden, three-wheeled push cart and always turned by hand, as happened a century ago.

When you sail with the Tres Hombres, you will not count as a passenger, no, you're really a part of the crew! You come on board "with the safe holes" or you start at the lower rungs of the ladder. You learn the necessary safety knowledge for ordinary seaman, ship maintenance, steering, pay attention to changes, set sail and more. Then you proceed to sailor: Ropework, basic navigation and maneuvering under sail. Eventually after the necessary sailing time you have the experience to become a boatswain: leadership, harnesses, sail sewing, carpentry and ship seamanship in the widest.

The Helderse Vallei is the starting point of the 4 well-marked canoe routes that Den Helder has, with various jetties along the way. In addition, Den Helder has various waterways that are easily accessible for canoes. The village route (purple route, 15 km), the southernmost route, runs along the outer edges of Julianadorp.

Met mooi weer kan je ook op ons uitnodigende terras plaatsnemen aan de waterkant en zo in alle rust genieten van het mooie weer. Ook voor speciale feesten en partijen kan je bij ons terecht.
