Construction of the Afsluitdijk started in 1927. For this, workers were hired from all over the country, including many Catholics. There was no Catholic church in Den Oever. Then the employees asked whether a Catholic church could also be built in Den Oever. The Chapel was a gift from the MUZ (Society for the Implementation of Zuiderzee Works) and served as a Catholic church.

Haven Den Oever
Den Oever is also located on the Afsluitdijk and is therefore the only village that is located on fresh and salt water. The port is located near the Afsluitdijk on the Wadden Sea side. Den Oever is a real fishing port. A section of the harbor has been set up as a tourist harbour. You can take a Wadden cruise here or go for a day of sport fishing.

Palingrokerij Kay - Den Oever is a mobile eel smokehouse with a 5-star status. The eel comes from our own catch, IJsselmeer or even from Ireland. For the gourmets there is also smoked salmon and mackerel. During the season, own eel is caught on the Wadden Sea, you can see the traps when you look out to sea at the Monument!
