At the beginning of the last century, many flower bulb growers moved to the north of North Holland. Many growers from South Holland came to “De Noord”. This created a need for its own parish church. To cover the start-up costs, voluntary contributions were asked and a church bulb auction was held.
A committee was set up to prepare the foundation of a parish. This consisted of Mr P. Timmer (chairman) Nic. Onderwater (secretary) and D. Hoogeveen (treasurer). In 1928, JG Verhoeff was appointed first pastor and also building pastor of the new parish. The first board consisted of Pastor Verhoeff (chairman), PJ Timmer (secretary), Th.P. Hoogeveen (treasurer) with NH Onderwater and PG Teeuwen as board members. From November 1928 to September 1931 they lived in a temporary church and on September 13, 1931 the new parish church of St. John the Evangelist the Evangelist was solemnly blessed by Dean Guilonard van Schagen. Many improvements have been made over the years.
Even today the church is well maintained, partly due to the many recurring donations. In the first years there was a pastor and later also a chaplain attached to St. John the Evangelist, but now, with the help of the deanery, a team of pastors and pastoral workers are shaping the parish community of St. John. the Evangelist. The team is assisted by many volunteers from their own parish in various areas.
