Until 1929, Kolhorn was a port on the former Zuiderzee. Of the sizeable fishing fleet of Kolhorn, only dinghy KH44 remains from this time. What is special is that the history of the iron ship is completely known. In 1899 the iron ship was built at the W.F. Chair & Son in Alkmaar. The yard was founded in 1863 by Willem Frederik Stoel and was later named Nicolaas Witsen. A mayor of Amsterdam, who also gained fame as a researcher of technical developments in shipbuilding. Under yard number 186, the ‘Stavorensche bomboot’ was built on behalf of fisherman Pieter Bood from Kolhorn. Pieter Bood named his dinghy, fishery number KH44, Jansje Johanna (named after his youngest daughter, born on October 21, 1891). On April 23, 1900, the dinghy was launched in Alkmaar to go fishing from Kolhorn for (mainly) anchovies and Zuiderzee herring. With the successive fishing numbers KH44, BOL7, KH41 and WIN2 and different owners, until 1929 Kolhorn was always the home port of this staverse dinghy (or “Stavorensche Bomboot”, as the shipyard note states). The dinghy is now operated by volunteers. In the summer by organizing boat trips and in the winter by carrying out the necessary maintenance on the dinghy. Cruises can be made from the end of April to the beginning of October. A round trip is mainly carried out under sail and takes about an hour and a half. There is sailing on the Kolhornerdiep. The exact route depends on the wind! During the trip, the skipper will ask you to help with navigation and sailing. He also tells about the history of Kolhorn, its fishing and of course about the dinghy itself. The history of Kolhorn and the polders around it is also discussed.
