Wieringen is a former island between the Wadden Sea and Zuiderzee and is wonderfully beautiful. The coast between Camperduin and Petten was dominated for a long time by the Hondsbossche Zeewering; a 5.5 kilometer long paved dike that protected the land from the sea.

Schagerwad Schagen is approximately 100 hectares in size and almost entirely owned and managed by Staatsbosbeheer. This is the only nature reserve within the municipality of Schagen. There is a reed field of around 35 ha in the area, which is mowed every spring. The rest of the area is a small-scale polder landscape with a relatively high water level.
