The coast between Camperduin and Petten was dominated for a long time by the Hondsbossche Zeewering; a 5.5 kilometer long paved dike that protected the land from the sea. The Hondsbossche Zeewering has a long history of storm damage and dike repair. The name Hondsbossche comes from the forest that must have stood here in the past. It wasn’t big, just one dog (hont) or 0.1 hectare. The dike was widened in 2015 with a beach and dune strip the size of three hundred football fields.
