Helderse Historical Society

Showboat is a musical group from Den Helder, who are playing a musical each year. The organisation has 15 members.

The hiking network in North Holland offers hikers opportunities for healthy, challenging and interesting hikes in lovely North Holland. The various walks run through beautiful landscapes, charming villages and nature reserves, across farmland paths, ancient dikes and past historic locations. You can go hiking directly from one of the starting points, where you can choose from various marked routes. You choose the length and environment of your walk yourself. This way the hiking network provides both convenience and walking pleasure.

Our Dutch culture seems to be fading, but not in Den Helder. Since 1975, the Helderse Draaiorgelvrienden have been active to maintain a tradition. The 90-key street organ 'de Harmonica' is managed and operated by the volunteers of 'Stichting Helderse Draaiorgelvrienden'. Almost every Saturday they are with the organ in the city center of Den Helder. On an original wooden, three-wheeled push cart and always turned by hand, as happened a century ago.

Get up early for the best light. Walk with a guide and amateur photographers through the Grafelijkheidsduinen dunes and capture the winter silence, dunes, and sea with your camera.

In the heart of Willemsoord stands a must-see building: Den Helder City Hall. Housed in the historic mast shed, once part of the Royal Netherlands Navy, it is now an open and inspiring space for residents and visitors alike. Exhibitions are often on display – from art and photography to local stories. The program is constantly changing, so there's always something new to discover. The architecture is also remarkable. Old elements have been preserved and combined with modern materials. Think of a steel facade, a three-story atrium, and workspaces with water views. What makes this building particularly appealing is its sustainable character. The mast shed and sailmaker's workshop have been thoroughly renovated for sustainability, with solar panels, smart installations, and a thermal energy storage system. The sailmaker's workshop is even energy-neutral. This is an example of how heritage and sustainability can go hand in hand. A place with character, substance, and an inviting program.
