De Donkere Duinen is a planted pine forest. Landschap Noord-Holland ensures through management interventions that it is being transformed into a varied, more natural forest. They manage only the western part and the Gemeente Den Helder manages the eastern side.
Discover nature
In the area is a ring-shaped duck pond with banks. The area is very attractive for birds, so you will find, among others, the crested tit, long-tailed tit, treecreeper and goldcrest. There are also many mushrooms to be found in the forest, this is due to the somewhat moister soil and the wood from trees present.
