The Wadden Sea

The stunning Wadden Sea area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, can be explored on a variety of guided tours. From Den Helder, you can join different excursions such as mudflat hiking and birdwatching trips. At low tide, you’ll walk through mudflats, sandbanks, and over mussel beds.

From Den Oever, a fishing village located right before the Afsluitdijk, you can also take part in mudflat walking tours. Mud, water, and breathtaking open landscapes are the perfect ingredients for a wonderful day out on the tidal flats.

Want to spot seals? From Den Oever, boat trips to the Wadden Sea offer the chance to see seals in their natural habitat.

Or set sail with the Wadden Fishers’ Guild. They’ll show you all the wonders of the sea—both above and below the water. Their vessels depart from Den Oever, heading to the most beautiful spots in the Wadden Sea.

Every Saturday morning, the fishing harbour of Den Oever hosts a fresh fish market where you can pick up the catch of the day.
