The Wadden Sea

Visit the Wadden Experience Point near Den Oever, a striking observation tower with panoramic views over the mudflats. From here you can see the salt marsh, the Wadden Sea, the Afsluitdijk, the harbour, and a colony of spoonbills on the island of Vogelsand.

Nowhere along the Wadden coast is birdlife as abundant as at Balgzand. This nature reserve lies east of Den Helder and stretches to the former island of Wieringen. You’ll always find birds here resting or foraging for food.

This nature reserve on Wieringen features an inland lake on one side and the mudflats on the other. Birdwatchers love it for the great diversity of breeding and feeding birds.

Want to spot seals? From Den Oever, boat tours depart for the Wadden Sea. You’ll pass a spoonbill colony and have the chance to observe seals in their natural habitat.

Sailing weekly from its home port of Den Oever, the Skuutje is a unique way to experience the Wadden Sea. Built in 1840, the Wieringer Skuutje WR60 is the oldest fishing vessel in the Netherlands still in operation.

From Den Helder, various guided trips are organised, including mudflat hikes and birdwatching tours. Under the microscope, an entire wondrous Wadden world comes to life.

Zeeverse vis koop je bij de vismarkten. In Den Helder is de vismarkt elke vrijdag van 12.00-17.30 uur en in Den Oever elke zaterdag van 8.30-12.00 uur. Vers gevangen door vissers uit de regio.

In een fort uit de Napoleontische tijd, zit Stadsbrouwerij de Helderse Jongens. Een volwaardige brouwerij en een brouwcafé met zicht op het brouwproces. Proef een heerlijk lokaal biertje en geniet.

Bij Fort Kijkduin in Den Helder vind je het mooiste terras aan zee. Met een 270 graden view op de Grafelijkheidsduinen, de Noord- en de Waddenzee, zandplaat de Razende Bol en Texel is het hier goed toeven.

Je leert het Wad en de zee beter kennen aan boord van het visserschip WR130 en hoort originele verhalen over de wadden- en palingvisserij.

Onder begeleiding van een ervaren gids kun je, tijdens het wadlopen, aan den lijve ondervinden hoe uniek dit prachtige stuk natuur is.

Garnalenvissen en varen langs lepelaars en zeehonden vanuit de haven van Den Oever. Tijdens de terugvaart wordt een deel van de grote garnalen aan boord gekookt.
