Hamnet is a 2025 British-American drama film directed by Chloé Zhao and starring Jessie Buckley, Emily Watson, and Paul Mescal. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Maggie O’Farrell and tells the story of Agnes, an independent and intuitive woman with knowledge of herbs and medicine, and her marriage to William Shakespeare. When their eleven-year-old son Hamnet dies of the plague, Agnes and William are confronted with a profound loss. The film does not focus on a classic biographical narrative, but rather on themes such as motherhood, grief, love, and the impact of loss on the life and work of an artist.
