In 1930 the Leemans pumping station and the Lely pumping station near Medemblik started to drain the 20,000 hectare Wieringermeer. It took them six months to do that. The Wieringermeer is located 6.60 meters below sea level and is one of the deepest reclaimed land in the Netherlands. This large difference in depth is clearly visible in the Stontelersluis next to the Leemans pumping station.
