The locks were constructed simultaneously with the construction of the Afsluitdijk, almost 100 years ago. Due to the rising sea level, the dike will have to be raised and reinforced in the coming period. In order to discharge more water from the IJsselmeer to the Wadden Sea, extra discharge sluices are being built. There will also be a large pumping station, which will be used if insufficient water can be drained away by flushing.

Palingrokerij Kay – Den Oever
Palingrokerij Kay - Den Oever is a mobile eel smokehouse with a 5-star status. The eel comes from our own catch, IJsselmeer or even from Ireland. For the gourmets there is also smoked salmon and mackerel. During the season, own eel is caught on the Wadden Sea, you can see the traps when you look out to sea at the Monument! De Hoop
Corn mill De Hoop was probably built around 1654. Since 2015, the mill has been milling again and runs weekly thanks to the efforts of volunteers.
