Pale 0

Pale 0

Pale 0 marks the beginning of the Dutch coastline. You’ll find it at the foot of the dike near Huisduinen. This is where the North Sea and the Wadden Sea meet, a unique part of the Netherlands.

Historic beacon by the sea

The system of beach markers was devised around 1840 by hydraulic engineer Jan Blanken. Pale 0 was the starting point of 117 kilometer markers along the coast. They aided in measurements, orientation, and safety.

Two poles, one story

Originally, there were two posts every kilometer: one at the waterline, one higher up on the beach. Both posts at Pale 0 have been replaced. This way, the location remains recognizable, even for emergency services.

Heritage with a view

Pale 0 is within walking distance of Fort Kijkduin. From there, you’ll have views of the sea, dunes, and the World Heritage site. A place of peace, history, and wonder.
