De historische landhoofden zijn een tastbare herinnering aan de trambrug voor de oversteek over de Langereis. Vanaf 30 oktober 1898 werd de brug gebruikt door de stoomtram van Schagen naar Wognum. Het traject Schagen – Wognum was 23 kilometer lang. De route van de tram was: station Schagen, Barsingerhorn, De Weere, Lutjewinkel, Winkel, Nieuwe-Niedorp, Langereis, Aartswoud, Hoogwoud, Opmeer-oost, Wadway, Sijbekarspel, Benningbroek, Wognum. De stoomtram deed 70 minuten over dit traject. Er werden 14 vaste bruggen gebouwd voor de tramlijn en bij Lutjewinkel een ophaalbrug met een vaste brugwachter. De tram vervoerde personen maar ook veel goederen voor de veiling in Winkel en de gasfabriek in Nieuwe Niedorp. Er reden extra trams voor tentoonstellingen, kermissen en harddraverij. In 1919 ging er een busdienst rijden tussen Winkel en Noord-Scharwoude waardoor veel passagiers met de bus gingen in plaats van de tram. Op vrijdag 31 januari 1930 reed de tram voor de laatste keer van Wognum naar Schagen. De afbraak van het baanvak volgde snel. Op een groot gedeelte werd een provinciale weg aangelegd. Het baanvak van Barsingerhorn naar Schagen bleef nog tot 1935 geopend voor de tramlijn naar Van Ewijcksluis. De ijzeren trambrug aan de Langereis heeft nog jaren dienstgedaan als overgang voor voetgangers en fietsers en werd pas verwijderd in augustus 1984 vanwege de zeer slechte staat. Stichting Historisch Niedorp heeft daarna ervoor gezorgd dat de overgebleven landhoofden werden hersteld. In 2020 zijn de brughoofden gerestaureerd. Het is een tastbare herinnering aan een belangrijk aspect van de vervoersgeschiedenis in onze regio. De landhoofden worden beschermd als provinciaal monument.
