Fort Harssens is the only armoured coastal fort in the Netherlands and is part of the Defence Line of Den Helder.
Unique military heritage by the sea
Built in 1885 on the Harssens sandbank overlooking the Molengat channel, it housed the largest fort cannons in the Netherlands. Each turret rotated 360 degrees and fired projectiles up to 7 kilometers away.
Forgotten, but not lost
The fort was abandoned in 1920. During the war, the cannons disappeared. Later, the fort was rebuilt by the navy. In 2010, its rediscovery began: moats were cleared and parts were restored.
