The Westfriese Omringdijk surrounds Westfriesland, from Alkmaar past Schagen and Kolhorn, Medemblik, Enkhuizen and Hoorn and then back to Alkmaar. More than 1,200 years ago, West Friesland was still a peat swamp above sea level. The early pioneers marked plots of land and dug ditches around them. That was to drain the excess water.
