Zandspektakel Julianadorp

Zandspektakel Julianadorp

From May 4th to August 31st, you can discover extraordinary sand artworks in Julianadorp. During the Sand Spectacle, you will see how sand and water are transformed together into impressive creations. The sand used for this comes from a sand pit in the north of Drenthe and, thanks to the sharp structure of the grains, is perfectly suited for building sturdy sculptures.

Discover the route through the village

You can spot the artworks in Loopuytpark, at Landal Beach Resort Ooghduyne, at beach bar Zee van Tijd, and in the Dorperweerth shopping center. Additionally, smaller sand sculptures can be found in the De Riepel shopping center and at the Junior College. This way, you can easily turn your visit into a beautiful route through the village.

How the sand sculptures are made

The sculptures are constructed by a team of twelve professional sand artists. Using wooden formwork, the sand is stacked layer by layer and firmly compacted, after which the shapes are carefully sculpted. In approximately 14 days, they process about 300 tons of sand into artworks that can be more than 4 meters tall. Each sculpture is unique and designed specifically for this event.

A unique experience at multiple locations

You don’t experience the Sand Spectacle in just one location. That is precisely what makes this outing so much fun: along the way, you constantly discover a new setting and a different story in sand. The combination with the coast and the beach gives the artworks extra atmosphere and makes the whole experience a true summery one.

How long will the sculptures remain standing?

The sand sculptures remain outdoors and, depending on the weather, can stay beautiful for a few weeks to sometimes even months. Rain usually has little effect: the water soaks into the sand and can even harden the surface. An environmentally friendly fixing fluid is also used to provide extra protection for the sculptures.

Vulnerable but impressive

Nevertheless, they remain fragile works of art. Because the sand is best worked when still damp, it can also be damaged again later. Occasionally, a small piece sinks in, for example due to weather conditions or an unexpected touch. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable, but where possible, minor damage is repaired.
