The pleasant Schagen is ideal for a walk. In the town you will encounter numerous historic buildings, but also the rebuilt Schagen Castle. Museum Vreeburg In the outskirts of Schagen you have beautiful views of the polder from the dike. You walk along the Schagervaart to Tolke. This hamlet originated at the intersection of two waterways where tolls were already levied by the city council of Schagen in the sixteenth century.
Back in Schagen you pass Museum Vreeburg. In this authentic seventeenth-century city farm you get an idea of Schager life around 1900. There are also some beautiful carriages on display. Picturesque Schagen In the center of Schagen you can admire several beautiful seventeenth-century buildings, including on the Loet and on the Markt. The neo-Gothic Christoforus Church dates from 1883. The bell tower contains one of the oldest bells in the Netherlands: a Herman bell from 1478. The towers of Schagen Castle date from the Middle Ages. You can enjoy a coffee, lunch or dinner at the cozy café-restaurant De KOEhemel.
Slot Schagen Slot Schagen was founded around 1440 when the first lord of Schagen had a square moated castle built. The castle has remained in the same family, Van Beijeren van Schagen, for more than two centuries. In 1658, the castle was sold to a nobleman who had the gate tower and front wall demolished and the drawbridge replaced by a permanent connection. Almost twenty years later, a descendant of the Van Beijeren van Schagen family repurchased the castle. However, he lives in Belgium and allows the castle to fall into ruin. The city of Schagen bought both castle towers in 1827. The west tower serves as a prison, the jailer lives in the east tower. It was not until 2002 that Schagen Castle was rebuilt in a suitable style. This is a route from route.nl
