The Sanibunker in Den Helder was built in the winter of 1942-1943. This medical bunker played a crucial role in the care of the wounded during the Second World War.
Professional care in a strategic location
A complete operating room was located in the sanibunker. Here, wounded soldiers were stabilized before being transported further inland. This offered a better chance of survival and relief for the front.
Compact, but effectively laid out
The bunker was under the command of the Kriegsmarine. One doctor and four nurses worked there. They could simultaneously care for ten lightly wounded and ten seriously wounded. An impressive achievement given the limited space.
