From 28 June to 10 August 2025, the special interim edition of the Photo Biennale Wieringen can be seen in the Oosterlanderkerk in Den Oever: Men of Basalt . In this exhibition, photographer Marcel Molle shows the raw and personal story of Wieringen stone-setting families who worked on the Afsluitdijk for decades. Through visual stories and interviews, visitors are taken along in generations of fathers, sons, uncles and cousins who, with their craftsmanship and strength, shaped and protected our dikes.
The exhibition interweaves historical footage from the 1930s with recent photography, thus forming a visual bridge between past and present. The result is a moving tribute to an almost forgotten work ethic and family legacy. Men of Basalt is a project of the Cultural Circle Wieringen and Photo Biennale Wieringen and can be visited in the Oosterlanderkerk. Tickets (€5) and a beautiful catalogue (€24.95) are available in the church and via the website.
